737 Supporting Surgeons in Their Return to Training

Abstract Aim t any one time, approximately 10% of the junior doctor workforce (∼5000 doctors) take time out training. Following Bawa Gaba case, and with trainees shielding during COVID pandemic, there is greater scrutiny demand to support returning frontline. Supported Return Training (SuppoRTT) a Health Education England Program designed improve Return-To-Training (RTT) experience. For surgical specialties are additional challenges reintroducing practical skills. Method e facilitated first regional SuppoRTT course for Orthopaedic Specialist Registrars, which consisted peer consultant-led clinical updates, forum discussions externally commissioned professional coaching. A pre-course survey established participants’ concerns expectations about RTT formed basis discussions. post-course assessed value impact on participants. Results Eight participants (6 female) attended. Grade training return ranged from ST3 ST8. Main areas concern related colleague perception, reduced confidence decision-making, operative skill fade, frustrations organisational elements managing work-life balance. There was an overwhelmingly positive response offered our course, particularly around on-calls. All respondents strongly agreed that sharing their hearing experience valuable.
